Anyone who's visited Castro's Barbershop knows how we feel about music, it's our raison d'etre. And every day at work, we get to indulge ourselves by playing an assortment of some of the music we love. Mostly a potent mix of American Roots music, including Blues, Jazz, Rockabilly, Country, Rhythm & Blues, Skiffle and more.
But it gets better. We have been asked to programme the music for a new weekly live music night in a brilliant bar called Malt just three arches away from us in Maltby Street Market. So now we can see some of our favourite acts performing live on a weekly basis almost next to the barbershop!
Starting on Thursday 23rd September, we will be launching Malted Shake, with live music every Thursday from 6-10PM (bands play from 7-9PM). In the Malt bar with its incredible natural acoustics and a sterling range of smaller label artisan UK beers, ciders and wines, we will indulge not only ourselves but anyone else who loves music as much as we do!
The opening act launching the first Malted Shake will be La Perra Blanco, an exciting young female guitarist and singer from Spain. Her explosive playing gathers influences from Rockabilly, Blues and Jazz and has won her a legion of fans. Partnered with her inimitable style featuring long dreadlocks piled atop her head, Western shirts and cowboy boots paired with mini skirts and eyes rimmed with thick black kohl, she's definitely one to watch.
Her debut album was released last year and she is coming to the UK for a mini tour including Malted Shake. Following this, there will be a different band every Thursday including Big Joe Louis performing an exclusive celebration of the songs of the legendary Lightnin' Hopkins. Acts also include award winning Blues musicians Paul Lamb with Chad Strentz and the eight piece outfit of Laura B and her Band.
